Pianist Dave Burrell is a singular artist: In addition to his acclaimed work as a pianist, he is a lecturer, prolific composer whose compositions recall everyone from Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson to Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, a recording artist who has recorded 40 albums under his own name, and the recipient of numerous awards, including those from National Endowment for the Arts, Philadelphia Music Foundation, William J. Cooper Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, Pennsylvania State Council on the Arts, MidAtlanttic Foundation, John Garcia Gensel Award and the Pew Fellowship in Jazz Composition.
