Immanuel Wilkins is the next youthful phenom to visit us @exuberance and we are thrilled.
Like Isaiah J. Thompson and Joseph Block, another Juilliard genius—saxophonist, composer and arranger. Supportive mother and father, dancer and trombonist respectively. Early mentor in Clef Club’s Lovett Hines, who provided Immanuel with both musical and professional guidance. “Besides exposing me to the history of this music and giving me the fundamentals, Mr. Hines hooked me up with performers like Edgar Bateman and Sid Simmons. I owe everything to him,” Wilkins says.

The other members of his group:
Micah Thomas is a Columbus native now at Juilliard. He’s played with John Clayton, Lage Lund, Etienne Charles, Joel Ross, Gabe Schnider, Tivon Pennicott, Harish Raghavan, Stacy Dillard, and Joshua Redman among others. He has appeared with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and will perform solo at this year’s Newport Jazz Festival.
Immanuel describes Daryl Johns as “the best bass player I have ever heard.” At age 13, Daryl was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition. Since then, he’s captured every award there is to win and performed with a slew of this music’s leading lights, among them Wallace Roney, Larry Coryell, Lenny White, Billy Hart, Joshua Redman, Vince Herring, Donny McCaslin, Joe Lovano, Ambrose Akinmusire, Christian Sands, Melissa Aldana, Russell Malone, Jimmy Heath, Roy Hargrove, Benny Green, Steve Wilson and Jaleel Shaw.
Grounded in the traditions of the djembe orchestra, Kweku Sumbry is a multi-percussive musician from Washington, DC. He began his studies as a toddler under the tutelage of Mahiri Fadjimba Keita, Mamady Keita, and Djiali Djimo Kouyate. A true global citizen, Kweku has traveled around the world, building upon his knowledge of world musical traditions and cultures. Kweku is percussionist with Cyrus Chestnut’s African Reflections band.
The quartet will perform Immanuel Wilkins’ most recent compositions. Young people energizing this music at this level at this time in our history is reason for praise and pride and hope. Our previous programs featuring these young lions have been among our most exciting and moving. Join us for yet another extraordinary ensemble.
