He is Senior Artist Teacher of Jazz Piano at The Jackie McLean Institute, Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford.
Shaun Brady describes a Germanson live set as “rough-hewn, feel-over-finesse,” alternating “the blazing and the blissful.” John Kelman calls him “a straight-ahead player who…plays without presumption, approaching everything he touches with heart, soul and improvisational élan.”
Rick Germanson has released three albums under his own name, 2003’s Heights, 2005’s You Tell Me, and 2010’s Off the Cuff. And there is the 2012 Live at Smalls. His performance here coincides with the release of “Turquoise Twice" on WJ3 Records.
Two jazz masters join him on that album and with us:
Gerald Cannon got introduced to his life’s calling by Milt Hinton. He’s played with Russell Malone, the Harper Brothers, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Dexter Gordon, Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins, Jimmy Smith, Little Jimmy Scott, James Williams, Hamiett Bluiett, Ed Thigpen, Frank Foster, John Bunch, Eddie Harris, Stanley Turrentine, Bunky Green, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Pat Martino, Louis Hayes and The Cannonball Legacy, Ernestine Anderson, Carmen Lundy, Abbey Lincoln, Gary Bartz, Joe Lovano, Cyrus Chestnut, Larry Willis, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Steve Turre, Eric Reed and Andy Bey. A seven-year stretch with Roy Hargrove followed by bass duties with the great Elvin Jones. He is musical director for the McCoy Tyner Trio.
Willie Jones III makes his return @exuberance to complete this trio—a consummate drummer who, over the past 20 years, has powered many a piano trio with Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Helen Sung, and Joey Alexander among them. He’s recorded with Horace Silver, Roy Hargrove, Arturo Sandoval and Herbie Hancock. He’s worked with @exuberance alumnae Russell Malone and Elio Villafranca.
Let there be no doubt that, come November 9, our house will be the site for real jazz.
